Closer to Memling - a digital experience around Hans Memling

A 15th-century master, very much alive in the attic

How do you build an impressive digital experience around Hans Memling without disturbing the authentic atmosphere of a historic museum attic? That was the challenge at the Museum Sint-Janshospitaal in Bruges.

Our shared history

After our previous projects in the museum, we were also allowed to transform the attic. Together with the client and our partners, we determined the layout, content, and interactive elements in brainstorming sessions. To make sure everything was watertight, we built a full-scale prototype in which both adults and children tested the applications. That thorough preparation guaranteed a smooth execution: in no time, the attic became a unique Memling experience, while respecting its historical charm.

Gigantic LED wall

The eye-catcher is a gigantic LED wall of nearly five by five meters, on which Memling's oeuvre comes to life in an immersive total experience. At a long touch table, visitors create their own group artwork together, discover the master's secrets through interactive games, and learn in a playful way, young and old alike. Light and audio are fully tailored to the artworks. “If you have an idea with technology that seems too crazy for words, then Ocular is the place to be,” summarizes E-culture coordinator Katrien Steelandt.
